‘Lama’ - meaning.
In Sufism it is regarded as important to have a living teacher. In our lineage, as a term of respect and endearment, we refer to our teacher as ‘Lama’. The word ‘Lama’ literally means ‘teacher’ but has other qualities to it that transcend the English word. If one attends a traditional Martial Arts School one will call the teacher ‘Sensai’ or ‘Sifu’ these terms garner respect and affection. It would be culturally disrespectful to refer to the teacher by their first name in the context of teacher-student relationship. Hence the prefix ‘Lama’ is always used with the teachers name if one is a student.
